Preet Didbal has been elected as the mayor of Yuba city in California.

Preet Didbal has been elected as the mayor of Yuba city in California, becoming the first Sikh woman to hold the position in the United States. Dibal was appointed by the California city council and will be sworn in on December 5, KCRA-TV, an NBC-affiliated television station, reported.

There are other Sikh mayors across the country — Ravi Bhalla was elected earlier this month as mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey. However, Didbal is the first Sikh woman to be elected as mayor in the country, the report said. Didbal was elected to Yuba City Council in 2014 and is currently vice-mayor. She is the first in her family to graduate from college. The Sikh Coalition estimates around 5,00,000 people who follow the Sikh faith live in the United States.

Apparently, Alia Bhatt was the first choice for the makers of Prabhas' Saaho, a role that eventually Shraddha Kapoor bagged.

Mumbai: Before Shraddha Kapoor was finalised as the lead in Prabhas's Saaho, the makers had approached Alia Bhatt to play Prabhas' romantic interest in the action thriller.

The Saaho team was excited about casting Alia. In fact, even her mentor Karan Johar wanted Alia to take up the role. However, considering the heroine has barely any scenes in the film in comparison to Prabhas, Alia refused to be a part of the film, a source revealed as per the report in Bollywoodlife.com.

 

“Alia is currently busy setting a league of her own by taking up some really good performance -oriented roles. So at a stage when she’s setting such a bright example as far as her film choices are concerned, she doesn’t want to break the chain by doing a film where she is more like a supporting cast. Even her family approved of her decision and have no regrets whatsoever,” a source stated.

The role finally bagged by 'Half Girlfriend' star Shraddha Kapoor.

A few months earlier, Alia was asked, who her favourite South Indian actor was. She promptly replied, "Prabhas." Lets hope the two powerhouse performers do something together bigger in the future.

The film that stars Jackie Shroff, Chunky Pandey, Mandira Bedi and Neil Nitin Mukesh in the supporting star-cast is slated for release in 2018.

Russian man dies after removing pin from grenade to pose for picture

The social media’s rise as a platform for reaching out to more people and sharing almost anything with the world has also fuelled an urge for people to film or photograph them in bizarre situations. In the past few years several people have lost their lives while trying to click risky selfies across the globe.

A man in Russia just paid the price for taking a risk which proved fatal as he tried to click a picture with a real hand grenade. Alexander ‘Sasha’ Chechik took the pin out of the grenade and posed for a picture which he sent to his friend moments before it went off.

The blast killed Chechik instantly and several similar pictures with grenades sent to other friends indicate that the blast wasn’t intentional. Police suspect that Alexander didn’t actually expect the grenade to detonate until he threw it.

Further investigations into the incident are underway as police have categorised Alexander’s death as accident and not suicide.

8 dead, 80 missing; warships deployed as cyclone Ockhi nears Lakshadweep

Chennai/Thiruvananthapuram: Several warships have been deployed for rescue operations as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds battered the southernmost coast of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, killing eight people – four each in two states – as deep depression over the Comorin Sea intensified into cyclone Ockhi.

Meanwhile, authorities have announced that schools in Chennai, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Madurai, Theni, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur will remain closed Friday.

Six naval ships and one coast guard ship have been deployed from Kochi, and one coast guard ship has been deployed from Tuticorn, said Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Two naval ships have been kept on standby in Lakshadweep, as cyclone Ockhi is heading towards the islands. The storm is expected to hit the islands on December 2.

Besides, P8i aircraft, Navy Dornier and Coast Guard Dornier are also airborne for search and rescue operations. Helicopter with divers is also on standby.

"CGS Samarth sailed from Kochi for rescue. All the units are directed to work for rescue along and off Kerala coast. In addition, the Eastern Naval Command will launch P8i Maritime Patrol aircraft," said Sitharaman

"INS Sagardhwani sailed to join for Search & Rescue. Total warships deployed SIX (06). For Search & Rescue (SAR) off Kanyakumari India Coast Guard deploying 2 OPVs in the area, and 1 OPV is being deployed ex Toothukudi. Additional Dornier sorties will be taken up from dawn," she tweeted.

The depression in Southwest Bay of Bengal had snowballed into the cyclonic storm – Ockhi.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall at isolated places was “very likely” over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala for the next 24 hours. Rainfall will occur at most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, very likely over Lakshadweep area, during next 48 hours”, the IMD said in its weather bulletin.

Squally winds, reaching speeds of 55-65 kmph and gusting to 75  kmph, were likely along and around Lakshadweep Islands  during the next 12 hours and may increase thereafter with wind  speed becoming 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from Thursday night. For the next 48 hours, the sea conditions would be “very rough to high”, the IMD added.

At least 80 fishermen and 50 boats have gone missing after Cyclone Ockhi lashed the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala with torrential rainfall and gusty winds.

On Thursday, a man in an autorickshaw died in Kollam after a tree fell on the three-wheeler, two others were electrocuted in Trivandrum and a woman died after a tree fell on her house in Vizhinjam due to the cyclone.

The deadly storm has killed seven people in neighbouring Sri Lanka and affected the lives of nearly 20,000 people.

What's new in Apple Watch Series 3

Apple Watch Series 3, introduced on September 15, 2017, is the third evolution of the Apple Watch that Apple first debuted in 2015. Apple Watch Series 3 is a lot like Apple Watch Series 2 with one major exception -- a new cellular chip.

For the first time, thanks to processor and battery improvements, Apple has been able to bring LTE connectivity to the Apple Watch. Apple Watch Series 3 is no longer tethered to an iPhone, an improvement that Apple says has been its vision for the watch from the beginning.

With LTE connectivity, you can leave your iPhone behind when you run errands, go to the beach, or go for a jog, but remain reachable via phone call or a message. The Apple Watch works just like an iPhone on LTE. You can listen to streaming music, get GPS directions, interact with Siri, and use third-party apps, all over a cellular connection.

A new red Digital Crown is available on all LTE Apple Watch models, but aside from that tweak, the design of the Apple Watch Series 3 remains largely the same as the Apple Watch Series 2.

It is available in 38 and 42mm varieties to fit a range of wrist sizes, and it is the same size and shape as the Series 2 Apple Watch. There's only one change -- the back crystal that rests against the wrist has been extended by 0.25mm. The size change shouldn't be noticeable to most users because 0.25mm is equivalent to the thickness of two sheets of paper.

As always, the main focus of the Apple Watch is health and fitness, and Apple's aim is to get people to be more active with features like built-in activity reminders and personalized fitness goals. The Apple Watch Series 3 continues to measure health metrics like steps taken, calories burned, and heart rate. It's able to track many activities using the Workout app, and in the Series 3 models, there's a new barometric altimeter for tracking elevation gains and flights of stairs climbed.

Apple Watch Series 3 is powered by a new dual-core processor that delivers 70 percent more performance than the processor in the Apple Watch Series 2. With the new processing power, Siri is faster than ever and can answer queries aloud for the first time. Apple Watch Series 3 offers all-day battery life, but LTE use impacts how long the battery lasts.

A new Apple-designed W2 chip offers 85 percent faster Wi-Fi while also being 50 percent more power efficient for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. And to enable LTE connectivity, there are new components like a tiny electronic SIM and tweaks to turn the display itself into a multifrequency LTE antenna. Despite these new components, Apple Watch Series 3 still offers 50m water resistance and improved seals, making it suitable for swimming.

Like the Series 2 Apple Watch, the Series 3 models feature a 1,000 nit display that's easy to see in bright sunlight, a GPS chip for recording precise distance, speed, and pace when running, an NFC chip for Apple Pay, and a Taptic Engine to provide haptic-based notifications and other feedback to wearers.

Apple is offering Apple Watch Series 3 in both LTE and non-LTE configurations for those who don't need cellular connectivity. Non-LTE Apple Watch models are dependent on the iPhone at all times and do not have an internet connection without one aside from known Wi-Fi networks.

Apple Watch Series 3 comes in a range of case materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, and ceramic. Aluminum models, Apple's most inexpensive, come in Silver, Space Gray, and a new shade of Gold. Stainless Steel models, Apple's mid-tier devices, continue to be available in Silver and Space Black, and to go along with the White Ceramic Apple Watch model, there's a new Gray Ceramic option. Ceramic models are considered "Edition" watches and are Apple's most expensive.

Stainless Steel and Edition models feature durable sapphire crystal displays that hold up well to scratches, while the Aluminum models offer Ion-X glass that's durable, but not as strong as sapphire.

All of the Apple Watch Series 3 models are sold with a variety of bands that impact the price of the device, and there are also standalone bands that can be purchased as additional accessories.

Apple has also partnered with Nike and French fashion label Hermès to offer Series 3 Apple Watch models with exclusive bands and watch faces.

Apple's New Flagship - iPhone X

The iPhone X, pronounced "iPhone 10," was introduced at Apple's September 2017 event as a classic "One more thing..." addition to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus product lineup. According to Apple, the iPhone X represents the biggest technological leap forward since the original iPhone was introduced 10 years ago, and it sets the path for the next decade of iPhone development.

Apple's aim with the iPhone X was to create an iPhone that's all display, blurring the line between physical object and experience. The 5.8-inch front screen melts into a highly polished curved-edge stainless steel band that encircles a durable all-glass body available in two pearlescent finishes: Space Gray and Silver. Both feature a black front panel.

The edge-to-edge top-to-bottom Super Retina display adopts OLED technology for true-to-life colors, deep blacks, and a million-to-one contrast ratio. It features a 2436 x 1125 resolution and 458 pixels per inch, the highest resolution and pixel density ever introduced in an iPhone. It supports HDR, wide color, 3D Touch, and True Tone for adjusting the white balance of the display to match the ambient lighting.

At 5.8 inches diagonally, the iPhone X has the largest display introduced in an iPhone yet, but with no bezels aside from a notch housing the camera and sensors, it fits comfortably in the hand. At 143.6mm tall by 70.9mm wide by 7.7mm deep, it's not much bigger than an iPhone 8, and it's smaller than an iPhone 8 Plus.

The glass body of the device is IP67 water and dust resistant and it enables support for inductive wireless charging for the first time. The iPhone X adopts the Qi wireless standard and can charge through the glass back using any Qi-certified charging accessory. Apple is making an "AirPower" accessory to charge iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3, and AirPods simultaneously, but it won't be out until 2018.

With an edge-to-edge design, there is no room for a Home button, so the iPhone X adopts a new user experience. A swipe up at the bottom of the screen brings up the Home screen, while a swipe and a hold brings up App Switcher. There's a Tap to Wake feature for looking at notifications, the side button can be pressed and held to activate Siri, and the Control Center is accessed by swiping downwards from the top status bar

No Home button also means no Touch ID, so unlocking the device is done with a new Face ID facial recognition system. Face ID uses the TrueDepth front-facing camera system to create a 3D map of your face that's used much like a fingerprint for unlocking the iPhone, authenticating Apple Pay purchases, making App Store purchases, and accessing passcode protected apps.

Face ID uses infrared camera technology so it works in the dark. It also uses machine learning and detects your face with hats, glasses, beards, and other objects that obscure your face. Because it uses a 3D map of the face, Face ID cannot be fooled by photos, masks, or other facial replicas. As an added layer of security, Face ID is "attention aware" and unlocks your iPhone only when you're looking at it.

Face ID is powered by a state of the art dual-core neural engine built into the new A11 Bionic chip, data stored in the Secure Enclave and all processing done on-device. The A11 chip includes a total of six cores, with two performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, including the neural engine.

The performance cores are 25 percent faster than the A10, while the high-efficiency cores are 70 percent faster. An upgraded GPU is 30 percent faster, and there's 3GB of RAM in the device.

With a second-generation Apple-designed performance controller, all six cores in the A11 chip can be accessed at the same time, resulting in much improved performance, especially when it comes to multi-threaded workloads. The A11 also features a faster GPU, an Apple-designed image signal processor and video encoder, an A11 motion coprocessor, and the Secure Enclave for Face ID.

With efficiency improvements enabled by the A11 Bionic chip, the iPhone X offers two hours more battery life than the iPhone 7, but the battery falls short of the battery in the iPhone 7 Plus.

The same 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera that powers Face ID enables a new feature called Animoji. Animoji are 3D emoji able to mimic your facial expressions. The TrueDepth camera tracks more than 50 facial muscle movements and translates that to the Animoji, which can be used in the Messages app.

Apple's TrueDepth camera also introduces Portrait Mode for the front-facing camera and enables Portrait Lighting, a new feature for adjusting the lighting in a portrait image taken by the front or rear camera.

In the back, the iPhone X features a vertical 12-megapixel dual-lens camera arrangement with an f1.8 wide angle lens and an f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens. Both lenses support optical image stabilization and have improvements like a new color filter, deeper pixels, better low light zoom, and improved video stabilization. Between the cameras, there's a new quad-LED True Tone flash.

With the individually calibrated cameras, a new accelerometer and gyroscope, tuning for ARKit, and the powerful A11 chip, the iPhone X has been designed for a better augmented reality experience. Developers can take advantage of both the rear camera and the TrueDepth camera to create unique AR apps with unparalleled face tracking capabilities.

iPhone X is available with either 64 or 256GB of storage. The 64GB model is priced at $999, while the 256GB model is priced at $1,199. Apple began accepting pre-orders for the device on Friday, October 27 ahead of an official November 3 launch date.

The iPhone X is Apple's new high-end flagship device, but it is being sold alongside two other new devices, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. Both devices are less expensive, but also lack the redesign and the new Face ID system.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A with MIUI 9 and 3,000 mAh battery launched at a starting price of Rs 4,999 for first five million buyers

India has just launched its latest smartphone, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A in the Indian market. The company has termed the device as 'Desh Ka Smartphone' to indicate that it is made in India. The Redmi 5A will be available in two variants.

The company has priced the base variant with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage for Rs 5,999 but first 5 million customers can get the smartphone for a price of Rs 4,999 with the discount of Rs 1,000.

Users interested in buying the 3 GB RAM with 32 GB internal storage variant can get the device for Rs 6,999. The devices will be available at Mi.com, Mi Stores in New Delhi and Bengaluru and Flipkart starting on 7 December 2017 at 12 noon. The device will subsequently be available on all offline retailers including Mi-preferred partners and other retail chains.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A features a 5.0-inch HD IPS LCD display panel. The company has packed a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC clocked at up to 1.4 GHz along with Adreno 308 GPU to handle graphics-intensive tasks. The company has launched two variants of the smartphone with the first one packing 2 GB RAM with 16 GB internal storage and the second one packing 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage. Xiaomi has given users the option to expand storage up to 256 GB using an external microSD card via a dedicated microSD card slot.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with a with a 13 MP sensor camera sensor with f/2.2 aperture and Phase Detection Auto Focus on the back of the smartphone. 5A comes with a 5 MP camera module with f/2.2 aperture on the front of the device for selfies. The device is powered by a 3,000 mAh non-removable lithium-ion

Nitish Kumar bans ‘Padmavati’ in Bihar

Bollywood has seen drama unfold, but the kind of drama that has been circling around Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati' has left everyone perplexed about the room for creativity in this form of art. Cinema is supposed to be about liberties and freedom to express through pictures and for entertainment. However, the intolerance level in the country seemed to have revoked all kinds of basic constitutional rights of citizens.

After innumerable protests, vandalism and threats against the movie, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and leading lady Deepika Padukone, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has chosen to ban the movie from his ruling state. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said Padmavati will not be screened in Bihar till filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali clears his stand on the objections raised by people. No formal order, however, has been issued by the government.

Speaking to reporters in his Vidhan Sabha office, Nitish said: "Since objections against Padmavati are being raised from several quarters, its filmmaker should clarify his stand. So long as controversy about the film does not subside, the film would not be released in Bihar."

He was quoted saying that he had issues with Deepika Padukone's character dancing in the movie. He said, "Once the film director provides the clarifications, we will consider showing the film in Bihar", further emphasising that he doesn't want unnecessary controversy surrounding screening of the film before the current objections are resolved.

Police said the man attacked Bithiri as he had allegedly made anti-India and anti-Telangana statements on his show Teenmaar News

Comedian Chevella Ravi, popularly known as Bithiri Satti after the name of his character in the show Teenmaar News, was physically assaulted on Monday at his channel office, V6, in Banjara Hills.

The incident occurred at around 2pm, when Ravi had come to his office and was suddenly confronted by his attacker.

According to local reports, the attacker shouted “Jai Bharat” while slapping and jostling him.

The assailant was immediately caught by the office security staff and others near the spot and handed over to the Banjara Hills police.

Ravi suffered minor injuries in the assault.

The attacker has been identified as Manikanta, who is a resident of Secunderabad, informed Banjara Hills police.

Speaking to TNM, Banjara Hills, K Srinivas said, “We have received a complaint from the victim although we are yet to file an FIR.”

“The accused seems to be mentally unstable. We tried to find out the motive behind his attack, and he claims that he was hurt because Ravi (victim) made anti-India and anti-Telangana comments on the show (Teenmaar News),” Srinivas said.

Teenmaar News is the name of a popular satirical show on V6, a regional news channel.

In the show, Chevella plays an intellectually disabled person, who presents news in satirical form and speaks in Telangana dialect.

In a video, where he narrates the motive behind the attack, Manikanta remains defiant.

He says, “I want to become a writer cum director, but after seeing this issue, I thought of forsaking my dream and focussing on this issue which is pertinent. Today, I came to burn down the channel. I’m willing to go to jail for my people.”

Film critic Mahesh Kathi has condemned the attack on Facebook.

Taner Kilic 'terrorism' trial: Indian government must help tackle Turkey's suppression of human rights activists

I am writing this from Istanbul, where I am attending a terrorism trial in court as an observer. The trial is that of the chair and director of Amnesty International Turkey. Some readers may know that I am also part the global movement, and am the executive director of Amnesty India. My colleagues Idil Aser and Taner Kilic are part of a group of people standing trial on charges of being members of a terrorist organisation.

Idil was given bail a few weeks earlier and I met her outside the court, but Taner is still in prison in Izmir, which is around 500 kilometres from Istanbul. He joined the trial by video link. He has been in jail since June.

The activists were charged after a workshop on digital security that was held in a hotel. The government claims, absurdly, that this was a secret meeting that was organised to spy and participate in a coup. Two foreign nationals, a German and a Swede, are also on trial in the matter but out on bail. The case is thin on substance and the main accusation against Taner is that he had downloaded an app on his phone.

This app, called Bylock, is used for encrypted communication, like WhatsApp. The Turkish government claims that Bylock was used by supporters to communicate secretly before a coup attempt last year. The claim about Taner is without foundation. Amnesty conducted two forensic examinations of Taner's phone, including one by the international technology firm SecureWorks, and found zero trace of the ByLock app on the phone. This was confirmed by an expert in the court hearing at which I was present at and I'll give some more details about that.

We began the day in the morning, when a group of us organised a protest outside the Justice Palace (as it is called) — a large and modern circular building with many courtrooms. The protest was well-attended by different civil society groups and individuals despite the fact that it was bitterly cold and windy. The foreign observers included the Amnesty chairs of Brazil and the UK, and also diplomats from the European Union and the United States.

A statement was read out in support of the human rights defenders. Taner’s 19-year-old daughter Gulnihal was with us and we were in good spirits.

The court could hold around 120 people in it, besides the lawyers and other officials. Every seat was taken and there were people outside who could not get in. The court had three judges — two men and a woman — in black robes with an upturned red collar. They sat on a raised platform, as judges do in India. Interestingly, the prosecutor also sat with them, to one side. I heard this man speak once and briefly during the entire hearing that went on for more than six hours.

Most of this time was taken up by the defence of Taner. The defence had an expert witness who spoke at length on the issue of the app Bylock. Taner’s phone had been returned to him by the police after they had made a copy of the software on it. The expert concluded that there was no chance that he had ever downloaded Bylock. In his witness statement, Taner said he had not even heard of the Bylock app until after the coup attempt.

Despite this, during the first hearing, he had not been granted bail. After that hearing, my colleague John Dalhuisen said that "it took the prosecutor more than three months to come up with nothing. It should not take the judge more than half an hour to dismiss the case against them". The case was not dismissed, and continued into the second hearing that I am describing. The senior judge, who sat in the centre, had a few questions of the expert, and it seemed to us that the day had decisively gone in favour of the truth.

The trial was conducted entirely in Turkish, with the exception of a very few English words (like "IP address" and of course "Bylock", but it was not difficult to gauge the impact the expert’s testimony had made). Taner made a direct and unemotional plea to be released on bail, given that there was no evidence against him. The prosecutor spoke the one line I heard him speak the entire day. He said the State opposed bail.

At the end of the six-or-so hours, the courtroom was emptied of all but the lawyers and the accused. We were asked to wait outside. We were informed later that bail had been denied, and the news hit all of us, but it devastated young Gulnihal.

I have been a court reporter for many years and have not seen such blatant suppression of those who are fighting for human rights, suppression of freedom of expression, and linking it to terrorism. I wish the Indian government had sent a representative also to the trial and I hope it does it for the next hearing. This is an issue we must take up with Turkey.

As an Indian and as a student of history, I was disappointed by what I saw in Turkey. We have close cultural ties with the Turkic people, from before that time that the Turks actually came to Turkey around 1,000 years ago. Most of the Islamic rulers of India were actually Turkish. Mahmud Ghazni was of Turkish origin, Babur was a Chaghatai Turk and Tipu of Mysore called himself 'Sultan' because he also claimed Turkish ancestry.

I wish the government representing such a great and storied group of people had conducted itself better in the matter of the trial of my colleagues, who are working for the rights and the betterment of the Turkish people.

26/11 Mumbai terror attacks: Ninth anniversary of strike that killed 166 people to be marked across city

Mumbai: In the memory of those who lost their lives in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack on its ninth anniversary, various events have been organised in the city on Sunday, including a `Salutation Ceremony' by the city police.

The Mumbai police have organised `Salutation Ceremony' at Shahid Smarak at the Police Gymkhana at Marine Lines at 9 am on Sunday, said an official.

Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, DGP Satish Mathur, city police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar, ministers, senior bureaucrats, police officials and family members of those killed will pay homage to them.

Tributes will also be paid at the memorial of assistant sub-inspector Tukaram Ombale at Girgaum Chowpatty. It was at this spot that Ombale caught Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab alive while getting killed himself.

Hundreds of people are also expected to offer tributes at the city landmarks targeted by Pakistani terrorists, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Taj Hotel at the Gateway of India, Cafe Leopold, Rang Bhavan Lane near Cama Hospital and St Xavier's College where then ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte and Inspector Vijay Salaskar were killed.

Family members of the deceased will be felicitated at the Bombay Stock Exchange in the presence of chief minister Fadnavis, RSS leader Indresh Kumar, Union ministers Hansraj Ahir and Kiren Rijiju and Lieutenant-General Vishwambhar Singh, General Officers Commanding, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

Seventeen jawans of the Border Security Force, who set out for Mumbai on 14 November on `Martyrs' Ride', are expected to reach the Gateway of India on Sunday.

'Still feel papa will return home'

The daughter of policeman Tukaram Ombale, who was killed while trying to capture terrorist Ajmal Kasab, says her family still awaits his return, nine years after the Mumbai terror attacks.

"We feel papa will come home any moment, although deep in our heart we know that he will never be amongst us now," says a teary-eyed Vaishali Ombale, the eldest daughter of the Mumbai terror attacks hero.

"We always think that Papa has gone out on duty and will return home. We have kept his belongings at the place they used to be in our home. Our family is proud of his supreme sacrifice," Vaishali Ombale, who has completed her M.Ed (Masters in education) and aspires to be a lecturer, told PTI.

Ombale, an assistant sub-inspector, was killed by Kasab's bullets in the early hours of 27 November, 2008.

In a daring act, he had pounced on Kasab without thinking much about the consequences. His bravery had made it possible for the police to overpower Kasab, the only 26/11 terrorist to be captured and hanged.

"Not a day has gone by in the last nine years that we have not remembered him," said Vaishali Ombale, who stays at the Worli Police Camp with her mother Tara and sister Bharti, who is an officer in the state GST department.

"For how long will police or armed forces personnel continue losing their lives in the name of supreme sacrifice," she asked.

"This should stop somewhere. There should be a change in this scenario. Every citizen should always be alert and foil incidents in which we are losing our men," she said, ahead of the 26/11 attacks anniversary.

Vaishali Ombale said citizens should know their responsibilities and must understand that when policemen or armed forces personnel get killed in the line of duty, it is not only the family's loss but also that of the country.

"Satara district in Western Maharashtra from where my family hails has a long history of martyrs. Among the recent ones are CRPF head constable Ravindra Dhanawade, who was killed while fighting terrorists in Kashmir in August and Colonel Santosh Mahadik, who died while fighting terrorists in Kashmir in 2015. The list is unending, which disturbs me a lot," she said.

"We treat every member of a martyr's family like our own family and we help them overcome the grief," she said.

Vaishali Ombale gives tuitions to students from Class 8 to junior college, which keeps her busy and makes her forget the pain of losing her father.

On November 26, 2008, 10 terrorists of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) arrived in Mumbai by sea route and opened fire indiscriminately at people on different locations. In the mayhem that followed over the next three days, 166 people were killed, including 18 police officers and two NSG commanders, and 308 people injured, besides property worth crores left damaged.

మెట్రో రైలుబండి... వస్తోందండి..!

ఆ రైలెక్కితే కింద వెళ్లే బస్సుల్నీ మనుషుల్నీ చూడొచ్చు. ‘అదిగో బిర్లామందిర్‌... ఇటు అసెంబ్లీ... అరే అప్పుడే నాంపల్లి స్టేషన్‌ వచ్చేసిందే...’ అని ఆశ్చర్యపోతూ చల్లని ఏసీ కోచ్‌లో కూర్చుని హైదరాబాద్‌ అందాలన్నీ చూసేయొచ్చు. నగరం ఆ చివర నుంచి ఈ చివరకు గంటలో దూసుకెళ్లిపోవచ్చిక. నిజానికిది మామూలు రైలూ కాదు, అలా అని బస్సూ కాదు... పొడుగు బస్సులా కన్పిస్తూ పట్టాల మీద నడిచే పొట్టి రైలిది. మొత్తానికి రోడ్డు‘పైకి’ వచ్చిన రైలిది!త్వరలో పట్టాలెక్కబోతున్న ఈ మెట్రో మ్యాజిక్‌ చూద్దాం రండి.

ఇల్లు మారాలనుకుంటున్నాం. మీ ఏరియాలో ఏమన్నా ఉంటే చెప్పండి.’
‘డబుల్‌ బెడ్‌ రూమ్‌ చాలు కదా. అద్దె ఎంతవరకూ పెడతారు?’
‘అద్దె కాస్త ఎక్కువైనా పర్వాలేదు. మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌కి దగ్గరగా ఉంటే చాలు.’

‘మీవాడు హైదరాబాద్‌లో ఇల్లు కొనుక్కున్నాడట. ఎంతైందేమిటి?’
‘డబుల్‌ బెడ్‌రూమ్‌ ఇల్లే నలభై లక్షలు దాటింది. సిటీ సెంటర్‌ కూడా కాదు కానీ మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌ దగ్గరే ఉందట, అందుకని రూపాయి కూడా తగ్గలేదు బిల్డరు.’

‘దిల్‌సుఖ్‌ నగర్‌ తెలుసు కదా నీకు. అక్కడికి వచ్చాక సరిగ్గా 156 నంబరు మెట్రో పిల్లర్‌ దగ్గర ఎడమ పక్క సందులోకి తిరుగు. నేరుగా ఒక ఫర్లాంగ్‌ వచ్చాక కుడిచేతి పక్కన స్కూలు కన్పిస్తుంది. దాని పక్క బిల్డింగే...’

భాగ్యనగర వాసులు ఇప్పుడు ఇలాగే మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నారు. ఇక్కడ ఇప్పుడు అన్ని పనులకూ మెట్రోతోనే లింకు. ఇప్పటికే హైదరాబాద్‌ నగర స్వరూపాన్ని మార్చేసిందీ మెట్రో. ఇక జీవనవిధానాన్నీ మార్చబోతోంది. గతుకుల్లేని రోడ్లూ... వేళకు వచ్చే బస్సులూ...ట్రాఫిక్‌ జాములు లేని కూడళ్లూ... ఇవి తరతరాలుగా హైదరాబాదీల తీరని కోరికలు. ఇవి చాలవన్నట్లు కొందరి అస్తవ్యస్తమైన డ్రైవింగ్‌ అలవాట్లూ హఠాత్తుగా రోడ్డుమీద ప్రత్యక్షమయ్యే జంతువులూ... వాహనాలు నడిపే వారికి బీపీ తెప్పిస్తాయి. ఫలితం... అటు ఆఫీసుకూ ఆలస్యం. ఇటు ఒళ్లూ హూనం.

తీరా అలసి సొలసి ఇంటికొస్తే... స్కూలుకెళ్తున్న బుజ్జిగాడికి పెన్నో పుస్తకమో కావాలి. పసిదానికి పాలో హార్లిక్సో కొనాలి. మామగారికి మందుబిళ్లలూ రేపటికి కూరగాయలూ... అంటూ చేతిసంచీ అందిస్తుంది ఇల్లాలు. ఉసూరుమంటూ మళ్లీ రోడ్డెక్కక తప్పదు సగటు నగరజీవికి.

ఈ చిక్కులన్నిటికీ పరిష్కారం... మెట్రో! చక్కగా ఏసీలో కుదుపుల్లేని ప్రయాణం. తల చెరగకుండా, దుస్తులు నలగకుండా ఆఫీసుకు వెళ్లిరావచ్చు. తిరుగు ప్రయాణంలో స్టేషన్‌లోనే కావలసినవన్నీ కొనేసుకుని ఇంటికి చేరుకోవచ్చు. కాసేపు స్టేషన్‌ ఆవరణలోనే చెట్టుకింద బెంచీ మీద కూర్చుని దోస్తులతో ముచ్చట్లూ చెప్పుకోవచ్చు. మెట్రో రైళ్లు తిరగడం మొదలెడితే హైదరాబాదీల దినచర్యలో వూహించని మార్పులు రానున్నాయి. తొలిదశ మెట్రో త్వరలో ప్రారంభం కాబోతున్న సందర్భంగా ఆ విశేషాలు...

మెట్రో... ఎందుకూ ఏమిటీ! ఎటువెళ్లినా ఏదో ఒక చారిత్రక ఆనవాలు కన్పించే హైదరాబాద్‌లో గత కొన్ని దశాబ్దాల్లో గణనీయమైన మార్పులు చోటుచేసుకున్నాయి. ఆకాశహర్మ్యాలూ విశాలమైన రోడ్లూ ఫ్లైఓవర్లతో నగర ముఖచిత్రం మారిపోయింది. నగరానికి సైబరాబాద్‌ అనుబంధమైంది. ప్రపంచ స్థాయి సంస్థలెన్నో నగరంలో తమ చిరునామా ఏర్పరచుకున్నాయి. ఐటీ, ఫార్మా, బయోటెక్‌, టూరిజం రంగాల్లో వేగంగా అభివృద్ధిని నమోదు చేస్తున్న నగర జనాభా ఇప్పటికే కోటి దాటుతోంది. పట్టణీకరణా జనాభా పెరుగుదలా ప్రపంచమంతటా ఉన్న సమస్యే. దాని వల్ల నగరాల్లో వాహనాలు ఇబ్బడిముబ్బడిగా పెరిగి రహదారులు ఇరుకైపోతున్నాయి. ట్రాఫిక్‌ జాములతో గమ్యం చేరడానికి గంటలు పట్టేస్తోంది. వీటిని అధిగమించడానికి ఏం చేయాలన్న ఆలోచన ఇప్పటిది కాదు. రవాణా సాధనాల అభివృద్ధితో పాటూ అదీ పెరుగుతూ వచ్చింది. 150 ఏళ్ల క్రితమే ప్రత్యేకమైన మార్గంలో సాఫీగా ప్రయాణం సాగించేందుకు లండన్‌ అండర్‌గ్రౌండ్‌ ఏర్పాటైంది. ర్యాపిడ్‌ ట్రాన్సిట్‌ వ్యవస్థగా పేర్కొనే ఆధునిక రవాణా సాధనాలన్నిటికీ అదే మూలం. అప్పట్లో రైళ్లు స్టీమ్‌ ఇంజిన్‌తో నడిచేవి కాబట్టి భూగర్భంలో వెళ్తున్నప్పుడు సమస్యలు ఎదురయ్యేవి. క్రమేణా విద్యుత్‌ వాడకం వచ్చాక పూర్తిగా భూగర్భ రవాణా సులువైంది. ఒకేసారి ఎక్కువ మంది ప్రయాణికులను చేరవేసే ‘మాస్‌ ర్యాపిడ్‌ ట్రాన్సిట్‌ సిస్టమ్‌’గా మెట్రోకి ఆదరణ ఎక్కువ. నిజానికి ‘మెట్రో’ అన్న పదానికి మూలం మెట్రోపాలిటన్‌. నగరాలకు ప్రత్యేకించిన రవాణా వ్యవస్థ కాబట్టి ‘మెట్రో’ అన్న పదం స్థిరపడిపోయింది. అమెరికాలో దీన్నే ‘సబ్‌వే’ అంటున్నారు. ప్రపంచంలో అన్నిటికన్నా ఎక్కువగా ఇలాంటి ప్రయాణ వ్యవస్థలు ఉన్నది చైనాలో. అన్నిటికన్నా బిజీగా ఉండే వాటిల్లో టోక్యో సబ్‌వే, సియోల్‌ మెట్రోపాలిటన్‌ సబ్‌వే, మాస్కో మెట్రో, బీజింగ్‌ సబ్‌వే, షాంఘై మెట్రోలున్నాయి. మనదేశంలో ఇప్పటికే తొమ్మిది నగరాల్లో మెట్రో రైలు సర్వీసులు పనిచేస్తున్నాయి. పదోదే హైదరాబాద్‌ మెట్రో. దేశంలో ఇంకా పలు నగరాల్లో మెట్రో నిర్మాణానికి ఏర్పాట్లు జరుగుతున్నాయి. అవకాశాన్ని బట్టి మెట్రో నిర్మాణాన్ని మూడు రకాలుగా చేపట్టవచ్చు. పూర్తిగా భూగర్భంలో, ప్రత్యేకమైన మార్గంలో భూమి మీద, లేదా హైదరాబాదులో నిర్మించినట్లు ఎత్తుగా ఆకాశంలో.

మన మెట్రో ప్రత్యేకతలివి! హైదరాబాద్‌ మెట్రోకి పలు విశేషాలున్నాయి. * ఒంటి స్తంభం వయాడక్ట్‌లతో వినూత్నమైన డిజైను. ఇప్పటివరకు పనిచేస్తున్న మెట్రోలన్నిటిలోకీ అత్యంత ఆధునికమైన వ్యవస్థ. * ప్రాజెక్టు ఖర్చు దాదాపు రూ.20 వేల కోట్లు. * ప్రభుత్వ, ప్రైవేటు భాగస్వామ్యంతో ఈ అతి పెద్ద ప్రాజెక్టును ఎల్‌ అండ్‌ టీ సంస్థ నిర్మిస్తోంది. * మూడు కారిడార్లు, 72 కి.మీ. * మియాపూర్‌- అమీర్‌పేట, అమీర్‌పేట- నాగోల్‌ మార్గాలు(మొత్తం కలిసి 30కి.మీ.) ప్రారంభానికి సిద్ధం. ఒకేసారి ఇంత పొడవు మార్గం ప్రారంభించడమూ దేశంలో ఇదే మొదటిసారి. * పది నిమిషాలకో రైలు. రద్దీగా ఉన్నప్పుడు మూడు నిమిషాలకో రైలు నడుపుతారు. * సగానికి పైగా ప్రయాణ సమయం ఆదా. రోడ్డు మీద ప్రయాణానికి గంటన్నర పైగా పడితే మెట్రోలో 40 నిమిషాలకే చేరుకోవచ్చు. * ఒక్కో ట్రైనుకీ మూడు కోచ్‌లు. అవసరమైతే అదనపు కోచ్‌లు జతచేసే సౌలభ్యం. అంతా ఏసీ. ట్రైన్‌లో దాదాపు వెయ్యిమంది ప్రయాణించవచ్చు. 126 మంది మాత్రమే కూర్చునీ మిగిలినవారంతా సౌకర్యంగా నిలబడీ ప్రయాణించవచ్చు. * ఏ స్టేషన్‌ వచ్చిందీ రాబోయే స్టేషన్‌ ఏదీ అన్న విషయం రైల్లో మూడు భాషల్లో ఎప్పటికప్పుడు ప్రకటన విన్పిస్తుంటుంది. * మొబైల్‌, ల్యాప్‌టాప్‌ ఛార్జింగ్‌ సౌకర్యం ఉంటుంది. * ఒక్కో స్టేషన్‌లో 20 సెకన్లు మాత్రమే ఆగుతుంది. స్మార్ట్‌ కార్డుతోనే లోనికి ప్రవేశం. * పొద్దున్నే మొదటి రైలు 5.30గంటలకు, రాత్రి చివరి రైలు 11.30 గంటలకు. * విద్యుత్తుతో నడుస్తుంది. కరెంటు పోతే ప్రయాణానికి ఆటంకం ఏర్పడకుండా వెంటనే జనరేటర్లు పనిచేస్తాయి. అధునాతన బ్రేకింగ్‌ వ్యవస్థ వల్ల ఈ రైలుకి బ్రేక్‌ వేసినప్పుడు విద్యుత్తు ఉత్పత్తి అవుతుంది. దాన్నీ వినియోగిస్తారు. స్టేషన్లలో సౌరవిద్యుత్తును వినియోగిస్తారు. * కిలోమీటరుకు ఒక స్టేషన్‌ ఉంటుంది. మొత్తం స్టేషన్లు 64. తొలి విడతలో 24 అందుబాటులోకి వస్తాయి. * 57 రైళ్లు సిద్ధంగా ఉన్నాయి.

‘నిజ్‌’... మెట్రో మస్కట్‌! హైదరాబాద్‌ మెట్రో రైల్‌కీ ఒక చిహ్నం ఉంది. దాని పేరు ‘నిజ్‌’. నగరాన్ని పాలించిన నిజాం రాజును గుర్తు చేస్తూ ఈ పేరు పెట్టారు. ‘నిజ్‌’ని ఓ గుర్తుగా మాత్రమే కాదు, హైదరాబాదీ యువతరానికి ప్రతీకగా చూపిస్తూ ఆ పాత్రకి ఓ కథ కూడా అల్లారు మెట్రో అధికారులు. దాని ప్రకారం నిజాం వారసుల కుటుంబంలో 1985లో పుట్టిన నిజ్‌ దిల్లీ ఐఐటీలో ఇంజినీరింగ్‌ చదివాడు. అమెరికా వెళ్లి అక్కడి కొలంబియా యూనివర్శిటీలోని ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మక గ్రాడ్యుయేట్‌ స్కూల్‌ ఆఫ్‌ ఆర్కిటెక్చర్‌, ప్లానింగ్‌ అండ్‌ ప్రిజర్వేషన్‌లో అర్బన్‌ ప్లానింగ్‌లో మాస్టర్స్‌ పట్టా పొందాడు. కుటుంబాన్నీ స్వదేశాన్నీ వదిలి ఎక్కువకాలం దూరంగా ఉండలేని ‘నిజ్‌’ తాను చదివిన చదువుని సొంత వూరిలో తోటి ప్రజలకోసం ఉపయోగించాలని తిరిగి హైదరాబాద్‌ వచ్చేశాడన్న మాట. మూలాలనూ సంస్కృతినీ మరవని ఈ టెకీకి స్టీవ్‌ జాబ్స్‌ అంటే ఇష్టమట. హైదరాబాద్‌ చరిత్రను ఎంత ఇష్టపడతాడో అంతగా ఆధునిక ప్రగతిశీల దృక్పథాన్నీ అనుసరిస్తాడు. ఉల్లాసమూ నైపుణ్యమూ సామర్థ్యమూ ప్రతిఫలించే ఈ ‘నిజ్‌’ అనే యువకుడు ఇప్పుడు హైదరాబాదీ మెట్రో కల్చర్‌కి ప్రతినిధీ అదృష్టచిహ్నమూనన్న మాట! చేతిలో రాజదండం లాంటిది పట్టుకుని ‘నిజ్‌’ వేషంలో ఓ వ్యక్తి ప్రతి మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌లోనూ ప్రయాణికులకు దారిచూపిస్తాడట.

కంట్రోల్‌ @ ఉప్పల్‌ హైదరాబాద్‌లోని మొత్తం మెట్రో రైలు వ్యవస్థ నియంత్రణా ఒకే చోట ఉంటుందంటే నమ్మగలరా? అవును, ఉప్పల్‌ డిపోలోని కమాండ్‌ కంట్రోల్‌ సెంటర్‌ నుంచీ అత్యాధునిక వ్యవస్థ ద్వారా నగరంలో వందల ట్రిప్పులు తిరిగే 57 మెట్రో రైళ్లనీ నియంత్రిస్తారు. సాంకేతిక లోపాలు వస్తే చక్కదిద్దే వ్యవస్థ కూడా ఇక్కడే ఉంది. అందుకుగానూ అక్కడో పెద్ద కార్యాలయమూ వందలాది మంది ఉద్యోగులూ ఉంటారనుకుంటే పొరపడినట్లే. కేవలం 40 మంది నిపుణులు ఈ పని అంతా చేస్తారు. మెట్రో రైలుకి ముందూ వెనకా ఆటోమేటిక్‌ ట్రైన్‌ ఆపరేషన్‌ వ్యవస్థ ఉన్న రెండు ఇంజిన్లుంటాయి. వాటిలో చెరో డ్రైవరూ ఉన్నా కమాండ్‌ కంట్రోల్‌ సెంటర్‌ అజమాయిషీలోనే రైళ్లు నడుస్తాయి. నగరంలో నడుస్తున్న రైళ్లన్నిటినీ వారు ఇక్కడినుంచీ చూడగలుగుతారు. రైలులో ఏదైనా సాంకేతిక లోపం వస్తే సరిదిద్దడంతో మొదలుపెట్టి రైళ్లు ఢీకొనకుండా చూడడం వరకూ అన్నీ ఇక్కడినుంచే జరుగుతాయి. రైళ్లను పరీక్షించడానికి టెస్ట్‌ట్రాక్‌ కూడా ఇక్కడ ఉంది. రైలు పట్టాల్లో లోపాలు తలెత్తితే క్షణాల్లో అక్కడికి చేరుకుని మరమ్మతులు చేసే ఆధునిక మరమ్మతుల వాహనం ఉంది.

ఇంజినీరింగ్‌ అద్భుతం! హైదరాబాద్‌ మెట్రో ప్రతిపాదన దశ నుంచే ప్రపంచాన్ని ఆకర్షించింది. ఒంటిస్తంభాల వరుసతో కట్టిన వంతెనా, స్టేషన్ల డిజైనూ వినూత్నమైనవి. నగరంలో రోడ్లు అసలే వంకర టింకరగా ఉంటాయి. వాటికి తోడు పలుచోట్ల ఫ్లైఓవర్లూ, రైలు వంతెనలూ ఉన్నాయి. వాటి పైనుంచి చాలా ఎత్తులో మెట్రో మార్గాన్ని నిర్మించడం కష్టసాధ్యమే. నిజానికి ఇది ఓ ఇంజినీరింగ్‌ అద్భుతం. అందుకే ప్రారంభం కాకముందే పలు ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మక అవార్డులను మెట్రో సొంతం చేసుకుంది. దీని నిర్మాణంలో అడుగడుగునా అత్యంత ఆధునికమైన సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానమే కన్పిస్తుంది. ప్రమాదాలకు ఆస్కారం లేని సురక్షితమైన రవాణావ్యవస్థ ఇది. ఒకవేళ సాంకేతిక లోపంతో ఎక్కడన్నా రైలు ఆగినా క్షణాల్లో సమస్యను పరిష్కరించగల సాంకేతికతా సిద్ధం. మామూలు రైల్లో ప్రయాణిస్తున్నప్పుడు పట్టాలకు అతుకు వచ్చినప్పుడల్లా శబ్దంలో, కుదుపులో మనకు తేడా తెలిసిపోతుంది. మెట్రో రైలుపట్టాలకు అతుకులే కన్పించవు. ఏమాత్రం కుదుపుల్లేని హాయిగొలిపే ప్రయాణ అనుభూతి పొందవచ్చు. మెట్రో రైలు స్టేషన్లు చిన్నపాటి విమానాశ్రయాల్లా విశాలంగా, సౌకర్యంగా ఉంటాయి. మామూలు మెట్లతో పాటు ఎస్కలేటర్లూ లిఫ్టులూ ఉంటాయి. స్టేషన్లన్నీ సహజమైన వెలుతురు వచ్చేలా పర్యావరణహితంగా నిర్మించారు. మొత్తం 64 స్టేషన్లలో మూడు ఇంటర్‌ ఛేంజ్‌ స్టేషన్లు ఉన్నాయి. రైల్వే జంక్షన్‌లాంటివన్నమాట. ఇక్కడ రైలు మారి మరో మార్గంలో వెళ్లే రైలు ఎక్కవచ్చు. మిగిలిన స్టేషన్లను సాధారణ, ప్రత్యేక అనే రెండు రకాలుగా విభజించారు. సాధారణ స్టేషన్లలో మామూలు దుకాణాలు మాత్రమే ఉంటే హైటెక్‌ సిటీ, పంజాగుట్ట, బేగంపేట, రాయదుర్గం లాంటి ప్రత్యేక స్టేషన్లలో ఫుడ్‌కోర్టులూ సూపర్‌మార్కెట్లూ ఉంటాయి. ‘కమ్యూనికేషన్‌ బేస్డ్‌ ట్రెయిన్‌ కంట్రోల్‌ - సీబీటీసీ’ అనే అత్యాధునిక సిగ్నలింగ్‌ వ్యవస్థను దేశంలో తొలిసారి హైదరాబాద్‌లో ఉపయోగిస్తున్నారు. రైలు కోచ్‌లలో వీడియో కెమెరాలూ స్టేషన్లలో సీసీ కెమెరాలూ ఉంటాయి. కట్టుదిట్టమైన భద్రత ఉంటుంది. స్మార్ట్‌ కార్డూ టోకెన్‌ లేకుండా ఎవరూ స్టేషన్‌లోనికి ప్రవేశించడం సాధ్యం కాదు. దివ్యాంగులకు ప్రత్యేక వసతులున్నాయి. అంధులు ఎవరి సహాయమూ లేకుండా స్వయంగా స్టేషన్‌లోకి వెళ్లి టికెట్‌ తీసుకుని రైలు ఎక్కవచ్చు. మహిళలనూ మెట్రోనిర్వహణలో భాగం చేయాలని భావించిన యాజమాన్యం 20మందికి డ్రైవర్లుగా శిక్షణ ఇచ్చింది. స్టేట్‌హోమ్‌ ప్రాంతంలో ఒక మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌ని అచ్చంగా స్త్రీలే నిర్వహించబోతున్నారు. నగరంతో విడదీయలేని అనుబంధం పెనవేసుకున్నవారంతా ఇప్పుడిక ఏ పని మీద హైదరాబాద్‌ వచ్చినా బస్సో రైలో దిగగానే నేరుగా దగ్గరలోని మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌కి వెళ్లే మార్గాలు కూడా తయారుకాబోతున్నాయి.

ఇక మెట్రో మాల్స్‌ హైదరాబాద్‌లో ఇప్పటివరకూ పెద్ద పెద్ద షాపింగ్‌ మాల్స్‌ కొన్నే ఉన్నాయి. మెట్రోతో పాటు మరో 17 మాల్స్‌ అందుబాటులోకి రానున్నాయి. వీటికోసం 57 ఎకరాల స్థలాన్ని ప్రభుత్వం లీజుకు ఇచ్చింది. పంజాగుట్ట, హైటెక్‌ సిటీ మాల్స్‌ దాదాపుగా సిద్ధమయ్యాయి. మెట్రో రైలు దిగి షాపింగ్‌కోసం ఎక్కడిదాకానో వెళ్లక్కరలేదిక. స్టేషన్‌కి ఆనుకుని ఉన్న మాల్‌లో షాపింగ్‌ చేసి మళ్లీ రైలెక్కి గమ్యానికి చేరుకోవచ్చు. మెట్రో స్టేషన్లకు అనుసంధానంగా వైవిధ్యమైన ఆకృతుల్లో విశాలంగా పర్యటకుల్ని ఆకట్టుకునేలా ఇవి ముస్తాబవుతున్నాయి. ఏటీఎం, నిత్యావసరాలూ మందుల దుకాణాలూ కూరగాయలతో మొదలుపెట్టి ఫుడ్‌ కోర్టులూ పాలీ క్లినిక్‌ల వరకూ ఈ మాల్స్‌లో ఉంటాయి. ‘హైదరాబాద్‌ నెక్ట్స్‌’ పేరుతో రిటైల్‌ దుకాణాలను ఏర్పాటుచేస్తున్నారు. ఒక్క దుకాణాలే కాదు, వినోదానికి మల్టీప్లెక్సులూ రెస్టరెంట్లూ గేమింగ్‌ సౌకర్యాలూ ఉంటాయి. పెద్ద మాల్స్‌లో పర్యటకుల తాత్కాలిక నివాసానికి వీలుగా భవిష్యత్తులో హోటళ్లూ సర్వీస్‌ అపార్టుమెంట్లూ కూడా నిర్మించే ప్రతిపాదన ఉంది. కన్వెన్షన్‌ సెంటర్లూ థీమ్‌ పార్కులూ వంటివి కూడా వీటిల్లో ఏర్పాటుచేయనున్నారు. మాల్స్‌ వరకూ వెళ్లక్కరలేకుండానే ప్రతి స్టేషన్లోనూ కూడా నిత్యావసర వస్తువులూ కూరగాయలూ మందులూ స్టేషనరీ లాంటివి అమ్మే సాధారణ దుకాణాలు ఉంటాయి.

తెలుగువారి సత్తా చాటాం తెలుగువారి చిరకాల వాంఛ నెరవేర్చగలిగినందుకు తనకెంతో సంతోషంగా ఉందంటారు మెట్రోరైల్‌ ఎండీ ఎన్‌వీఎస్‌ రెడ్డి. ఆయనేమంటున్నారంటే... ‘హైదరాబాద్‌ నగరానికి మెట్రో రైలు కావాలన్న ఆకాంక్ష ఇప్పటిది కాదు. ఏ ప్రాజెక్టు చేపట్టినా పూర్తవడానికి దశాబ్దాలు పడుతున్న రోజుల్లో శ్రీధరన్‌ కృషితో ఆరున్నరేళ్లలోనే సాకారమైన దిల్లీ మెట్రో ఆ ఆకాంక్షకు రెక్కలు తొడిగింది. ఎస్పీ సింగ్‌తో కలిసి నేను హైదరాబాద్‌ నగరపాలక సంస్థలో పనిచేస్తున్నపుడు మెట్రో రైలు ప్రతిపాదనను అప్పటి సీఎం వైఎస్‌ ముందు ఉంచాం. అయితే అందుకు చాలా డబ్బు కావాలనీ మన ప్రాధాన్యాలు వేరనీ అన్నారాయన. అప్పుడే పీపీపీ పద్ధతి గురించి ఆలోచించాం. దానికైతే రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వంపైన అంత భారం పడదని భావించిన నేను ప్రతిపాదనను ముందుకు కదిలించాను. నాటి ప్రధాని మన్మోహన్‌ సింగ్‌ భారతీయుల సత్తా చాటాలంటూ మమ్మల్ని ప్రోత్సహించారు. అది మా ఆత్మవిశ్వాసాన్ని పెంచింది. ఎవరో ఒకరు రిస్క్‌ తీసుకుని ముందడుగు వేయకపోతే చరిత్రలో అభివృద్ధి ఏదీ జరిగేది కాదు. అందుకే ధైర్యం చేశాం. మా ప్రణాళిక విని చాలా మంది పెదవి విరిచారు. ప్రపంచంలో ఎక్కడా జరగనిది ఇక్కడ మాత్రం ఎలా జరుగుతుందంటూ కొట్టిపడేశారు. వారన్న అసాధ్యాన్ని మేము సుసాధ్యం చేసి చూపించాం. తెలుగువారి సత్తా చాటాం. మెట్రో కేవలం ఒక రవాణా మార్గమే కాదు, దీన్ని ఒక జీవనవిధానంగా మేము మార్చబోతున్నాం. తెలంగాణ ప్రభుత్వంతో కలిసి నగర పునరుజ్జీవనం అనే విస్తృతప్రయోజనానికి మెట్రో రైలును ఒక సాధనంగా వాడుకుంటున్నాం. త్వరలోనే ఆ మార్పులన్నీ మీరు చూస్తారు. హైదరాబాద్‌ ఇంతందంగా ఉంటుందా అనుకుంటారు. నగరమూ దాని రోడ్లూ కార్ల కోసం మాత్రమే కాదు, సామాన్యులూ వృద్ధులూ స్త్రీలూ పిల్లలూ దివ్యాంగులూ... అందరి కోసం. అలాగే మెట్రో స్టేషన్‌ రైలు ఎక్కడానికి మాత్రమే కాదు, ఇక్కడ ఇంకా చాలా పనులు చేయవచ్చు. ఆహ్లాదంగా కాసేపు గడపగల పబ్లిక్‌ స్పేస్‌గా దీన్ని తయారుచేస్తాం. అందమైన ఫుట్‌పాత్‌లూ, పచ్చదనమూ, కూర్చోవడానికి బెంచీలతో స్టేషన్‌ పరిసరాలు అందరినీ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. నిత్యావసరాలూ మందులూ అన్నీ స్టేషన్లోనే కొనుక్కోవచ్చు. అవసరమైతే మాల్‌లో షాపింగ్‌ చేయొచ్చు. స్నేహితులతో కలిసి సరదాగా సినిమా చూడవచ్చు. ఇంత ఆధునికంగా నిర్మించిన మెట్రో ప్రపంచంలో మరెక్కడా లేదు. ఇతర ప్రాంతాల్లో మెట్రో స్టేషన్లు నగరంతో ఏమాత్రం సంబంధంలేని రాజభవనాల్లా ఉంటాయి. ఇక్కడ నగరంలో అవీ ఒక భాగంగా ఇమిడేలా పరిసరాలను అభివృద్ధి చేస్తున్నాం. ఇంత పెట్టుబడి పెట్టి కట్టిన మెట్రోకి లాభాలు ఎలా వస్తాయన్నది అందరినీ వేధిస్తున్న ప్రశ్న. ప్రపంచంలో దాదాపు 250 నగరాల్లో మెట్రో రైళ్లు నడుస్తున్నాయి. వాటన్నిటినీ అక్కడి ప్రభుత్వాలే నిర్మించి నిర్వహిస్తున్నాయి. సింగపూర్‌, హాంకాంగ్‌, జపాన్‌, తైపీ... ఈ నాలుగు మాత్రమే రియల్‌ ఎస్టేట్‌తో అనుసంధానించడం వల్ల లాభాలు పొందుతున్నాయి. వాటినే ఆదర్శంగా తీసుకుని మన మెట్రో ప్రణాళికను రూపొందించాం. ప్రతి స్టేషన్‌లోనూ 20శాతం స్థలాన్ని వ్యాపారానికి ఉపయోగిస్తున్నాం. వీటికి తోడు మాల్స్‌ కూడా ఉన్నాయి. కాబట్టి ఆదాయవనరులకు ఢోకా ఉండదు. సమయం కలిసివచ్చే సురక్షితమైన ప్రయాణమూ అన్ని రకాల సౌకర్యాలతో ఆహ్లాదకరమైన అనుభూతీ మెట్రోతో ప్రజలకు మేం ఇస్తున్న కానుకలు. హైదరాబాద్‌ని విశ్వనగరంగా తీర్చిదిద్దడానికి మా వంతు ప్రయత్నం మేం చేస్తున్నాం. ప్రజలనుంచీ కూడా మేము అదే స్థాయి సహకారాన్ని ఆశిస్తున్నాం.’

ఆవిష్కరణకు శరవేగంతో సిద్ధమవుతున్న మెట్రో జంటనగరాల ప్రజల్లో రేపుతున్న ఆసక్తి అంతా ఇంతా కాదు. కొన్ని సంవత్సరాలుగా సాగుతున్న మెట్రో నిర్మాణ పనుల వల్ల అసలే ఇరుగ్గా ఉండే నగర రహదారులు మరింత సమస్యాత్మకంగా మారాయి. మెట్రో పూర్తయితే సమస్యలు తీరతాయని భావించి ఓపికగా ఎదురుచూసిన ఫలితం ఇప్పుడు కన్పించనుంది.

అతి త్వరలోనే భాగ్యనగరవాసుల జీవితాలు మెట్రోతో అనుసంధానం కాబోతున్నాయి. ముంబయి ప్రజల జీవితాల్లో సబర్బన్‌ రైళ్లు ఎలాగైతే విడదీయలేని భాగమయ్యాయో అదే రీతిలో హైదరాబాద్‌ ప్రజల జీవితాలతో మెట్రో మమేకం కానుంది. ఠంచనుగా సమయానికి వచ్చే మెట్రో రైలు స్టేషన్లో 20 సెకన్లే ఆగుతుంది. అది మిస్‌ కాకూడదనుకుంటే పొద్దున్నే ఉరుకులు పరుగులు తప్పవు. అయితే ప్రయాణ సమయం బాగా కలిసొస్తుంది కాబట్టి దానికి తగ్గట్టుగా దినచర్యను ప్లాన్‌చేసుకునే వీలుంది. రోజూ మెట్రోలో ప్రయాణించేవారికి మరో స్మార్ట్‌ కార్డు అదనంగా చేరుతుంది. అప్పుడప్పుడూ వెళ్లే వారు మాత్రం టోకెన్‌ తీసుకోవాలి. తిరుగు ప్రయాణంలో రైలు దిగి స్టేషన్లోనే ఇంటికి అవసరమైన వస్తువులను కొనుక్కోవచ్చు. మెట్రో స్టేషన్ల పరిసరాలు అందంగా ఆహ్లాదంగా ఉద్యానవనాలను తలపించబోతున్నాయి. అందమైన ఫుట్‌పాత్‌లూ పచ్చని చెట్లూ కూర్చోవడానికి బల్లలూ ఉన్న స్టేషన్ల ఆవరణల్లో కాసేపు ప్రశాంతంగా సేదదీరవచ్చు.

గంటసేపు వెయిట్‌ చేశాక వరసగా క్యూకట్టినట్లు వచ్చే ఆర్టీసీ బస్సుల మీద వైరాగ్యమూ... గతుకుల రోడ్లూ కుదుపుల ప్రయాణాలూ... అన్నిటికీ ఇక సెలవిచ్చేసి దుమ్మూ ధూళీ లేని ఏసీ చల్లదనంలో అలసట లేని ప్రయాణాన్నీ, కిటికీల్లోంచి కన్పించే నగర అందాల్నీ ఆస్వాదిస్తూ... ‘రిమ్‌ జిమ్‌ రిమ్‌ జిమ్‌ హైదరాబాద్‌... మెట్రో రైలూ జిందాబాద్‌...’ అని పాడుకుంటూ హాయిగా మెట్రో రైల్లో తిరిగేద్దాం రండి!
